At Excel Packaging, we make it a point to give back to our local community. We frequently partner with the Village of Hope to help make food, donate gym equipment and a lot more. Last year was our first time sponsoring some of the children at the Village of Hope to participate in the Summer to Remember program. This year we’ve gone from sponsoring 10 kids, to sponsoring 20!
The children participating in the Summer to Remember program live with their families at the Village of Hope, a 192-bed transitional housing program for homeless men, women and children. The Village of Hope is a program of the Orange County Rescue Mission.
To address some of the issues facing children without stable homes, particularly academic achievement, the Orange County Rescue Mission in partnership with faculty and students at Concordia University began the Summer to Remember Program in Summer 2011.
The primary goal of the program since its inception is to provide homeless children with opportunities to grow intellectually, socially and emotionally through hands-on learning activities. This year, 35 children are participating in this essential program!
During the Summer, children will continue to develop appropriate social skills needed for relating with others — sharing, caring, trusting, turn taking, patience, etc. as observed by staff and counselors. They’ll also have a chance to continue developing their self-discipline and teamwork skills in sports and recreational activities as measured by individual and group participation during field day, fine arts activities, and crafts.
Other than just sponsoring their participation, we also will be helping to chaperone some of their field trips! We recently sent two of our team members to accompany the children to the Planetarium. It was a lot of fun!
Excel’s mission is to be a force for good. We aim to achieve this in part by participating and helping in our local community. It’s not only good for our community, but a big motivator to our team members to participate in this mission not only as part of the Excel team, but as leaders in their own communities. It’s part of what makes Excel Packaging a unique place to work and a passionate team of packaging professionals!
