Breaking News! The team at Excel Packaging is so proud to announce that we have just sponsored 10 kids from the Village of Hope to attend a 9 week summer camp! The programs and activities include science camps, learning camps, field trips, swim lessons, arts and crafts, creativity lab, and more. The camp will be held at Concordia University and Village of Hope, as well as off-site through planned field trips.
The Orange County Rescue Mission’s Village of Hope, in partnership with faculty and students at Concordia University, began the Summer to Remember program in the summer of 2011. They saw a great need in their community–to give support to those children who needed it most, keeping them curious and learning while having fun throughout the summer months. The children participating in the Summer to Remember program live with their families at the Village of Hope, a 192-bed transitional housing program for homeless men, women and children.
According to the American Psychological Association, half of school age homeless children experience problems with depression and anxiety and 97% of them have moved at least once in the last year, causing instability and disruptions in schooling. The compassionate people at Village of Hope and Concordia University started the Summer to Remember program to address some of these issues especially as they negatively affect academic achievement for these children. The idea is that a strong education sparked by interest and curiosity will give these children a greater chance to end the cycle of homelessness and poverty in their families, and maybe someday be so empowered as to end this cycle in their own communities!
During the Summer to Remember program, Village of Hope children will learn through hands-on projects, they will grow emotionally by socializing with their peers as well as the program leaders/chaperones, and they’ll have the opportunity to explore their own interests through a variety of field trips and activities. In past Summer to Remember programs, the children have gone to the Discovery Museum in Santa Ana as well as had a day out at the beach. They get a well-rounded experience–all while having fun and exploring new ideas!
The team here at Excel Packaging was ready to jump on-board to help sponsor this program upon learning about it. As this year’s Summer to Remember program kicks off this month, we’re excited to know 10 Village of Hope children will be able to take part in this program through our donation. We will be waiting to see how our team can participate in their events so can meet all of these children and really take in the impact this program has on their lives!
Excel Packaging has long been working with OC Rescue Mission, helping with their programs wherever we can. In the past, we’ve remodeled the Village of Hope gym, we’ve donated and set up gym equipment for homeless veterans, volunteered in the soup kitchen and more! It’s all part of Excel’s mission to give back to the community and motivate team members to participate in this mission not only as members of the Excel team, but as leaders in their own communities.
