Lunch is Served at Village of Hope

Posted on Categories Philanthropy

Excel Packaging is proud to regularly donate to and volunteer at the Village of Hope, a unique homeless shelter located in Tustin, Orange County, California. Their goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment where residents learn the skills they need to transition back into work and self-sufficiency. It is the largest of 11 shelters in Orange County run by the Orange County Rescue Mission. We were excited to go back recently to volunteer to make lunch for the residents.

The Village of Hope program serves daily meals to its residents of homeless men, women, and children. Meals are supplied through a combination of donations and purchased food; they are prepared in their kitchen by volunteers, clients, and supervised by full-time kitchen staff. This is the third time Excel Packaging has volunteered in the kitchen at Village of Hope and it is one of our favorite volunteer activities!

On the day of our scheduled shift, we arrived to the kitchen at the Village of Hope where we were introduced to the staff and given our meal prep directives. We then washed our hands and got to cookin’! A few of the crew were put on veggie-chopping duty while others helped make a nice, hearty soup for the residents of the Village of Hope. When lunchtime came around we were happy to see our efforts come together to provide a nutritious and tasty meal for the families and residents at the shelter. Our Prototype Technician, Kyle Rogers, was pleased with the experience: “I was very impressed with the professional staff and provided housing, I can’t wait to volunteer again!”

clean hands big hearts

This was a special day where the team enjoyed working together, with clean hands and big hearts!

The Village of Hope is located on a decommissioned military base, offering a 192-bed transitional housing program for homeless men, women and children. Opened in March 2008, the Village of Hope is unlike any other homeless shelter in the nation. This stunning development is meticulously manicured, tastefully decorated, and boasts more than 150,000 square feet of structures including two restored barracks, set on five acres.

The Village of Hope provides residents with career counseling, medical and dental care, recreational activities and a hair salon. They offer our homeless community members a safe place and a chance to grow. That’s why the team at Excel Packaging is always so happy to participate and give back however we can!
